Historically, Labor Day is a celebration of the economic and social achievements of workers, including the establishment of an 8-hour day in many countries during the 1800s.
Before the economic cause of Labor Day, the first May was the celebration of the start of the Spring season, especially in Great Britain, Europe, and North America, and is often called May Day.
In Malaysia, the origins of Labor Day are rarely considered, and the public often spends a day off to visit family, travel (if it is a weekend), or go shopping in the city’s supermarkets.
Sometimes, however, the day includes peaceful rallies of workers to promote better conditions and to remind politicians to keep their promises.
